About a month ago, I was contacted by the Sony Alpha Digital Imaging Team for the privilege to be part of a very exclusive and unique photography experience to be held in Manhattan. Of course I immediately replied to confirm my attendance. In it, they provided the entire group of photographers with the opportunity to get hands-on time with the Sony Alpha A7 full-frame mirrorless cameras as well as any Sony lenses of our choice. In fact, we had to submitted a total of 3 lenses that we would love to work with for the entire day. I’m personally such a minimalist that I opted only for the Sony 35mm f/1.4 and the Sony 24-70 f/4.
The experience was emceed by New York based photographer Jose Silva which I’ve known personally and admire ever since the early days of Instagram. The full day included stops at a number of shooting locations around New York but without question the highlight of them all was being able to board for the first time on a helicopter with the fine folks of FlyNYON and to be able to have observed the city I live in and appreciate it from a very refreshing perspective.
For the majority of the time, I was photographing with the Sony 35mm f/1.4 but once it came to the helicopter portion of the adventure, we weren’t going to be allowed to go up with any loose objects, so the ability to be swapping lenses in the sky was a no-no. At that point, I made sure to have with me the Sony 24-70mm f/4 to capture the entire experience from the moment we ascended until we landed.
