I would think having your own business and having kids are a lot alike in that you you put in an enormous amount of time nurturing them and analyzing how much they’ve impacted your life for the better and yet somtimes it doesn’t hurt to step a way for a bit and examine what’s ahead and how far you’ve come.
I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Kamelia in Far Rockaway, Queens to shoot one of the very few sunsets left of Summer 2016 where we chatted a bit about life and her upbringing.
1. How do you think your background, your life experiences, who you are – has impacted the way in which you approach work and life right now?
I believe my upbringing has made me a very tough and independent woman. I was raised by a strong single mom of two and so I was placed in a position where I had to learned how to be extremely independent and hard working very quickly. Now that I have my own business, I’m the person doing everything from designing new collections, to processing all incoming online orders and answering customers emails. Sometimes my days are extremely long and so I’m grateful for my background and the fact that I relish the hard work and don’t mind sacrificing for a better future. It’s all about thinking long-term.
2. What’s your daily routine that’s a non-negotiable which sets you up to become a better person?
Coffee and my morning workout. The two things are non-negotiable. As a person with a European background, coffee is in my blood I need it to start my day with it and the workout essentially sets the tone for how my state of mind will be for the entire day. Being healtlhy is not just about the aesthetics because that same discipline you adopt can seamleslly be applied to so many other aspects of your life.
3.What lessons have you learned in your career that easily apply to life in general?
Never underestimate people and never forget where you came from. Life is very unpredictable and you just never know who will become who and where life will take people, but at the same time stay grounded and down the earth because you just never know when things might change for the worse or for the better.
4. What’s something in your life that you’re very proud of that you accomplished but very few people know about?
I graduated with my Bachelors at the age of 21 and obtained my Masters Degree in Finance at 25 all while working 3 jobs. The fact that I was able to accomplish all this at such a young age made me very strong and goal oriented.
5. What would you say is missing in your life right now?
I would say that perhaps focusing more on my personal life. In my 20’s I focused so much on work and professional goals. That I will my 30’s I need to dedicate more time to my personal life and founding that special partner in life.
6. What are you working on right now that you’re excited about?
I’m working extremely hard on our next Fitness Apparel collection while also, attending about 3 expositions a month for the next 3 months, through out the Tri-State area bringing more brand (Figure Slim) awareness to my company and our amazing products.
